About this plant

The South African cousin of the bird of paradise, Strelitzia nicolai forms a fan of grey-green leaves carried on long stems. It easily reaches two to three metres indoors and instantly lends scale to a tall room.

Robust, it tolerates full sun behind a glass wall as well as the bright light of a hotel lobby. In Morocco it also thrives outdoors: sheltered terraces, riad patios and poolside on the coast.

Leaves that tear slightly in the wind are part of its character and do not affect its health.

Care

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

Water generously once the surface is dry, once or twice a week in summer. Cut back clearly in winter.

  • Light

As much light as possible: full sun behind glass or in a sheltered outdoor spot.

  • Feeding

Slow-release fertiliser in spring, topped up with a monthly liquid feed during active growth.

  • Temperature

Tolerates 5 to 40 °C. Bring it in or shelter it if nights fall below 5 °C.

  • Instant vertical presence, up to three metres
  • Equally at home indoors and outdoors on the Moroccan coast
  • Handles direct sun and high heat
