The specimen

About this plant

The olive tree has been at home in Morocco for thousands of years. Its grey-green foliage catches the light at dawn and dusk, and its habit suits every style: a clear stem and round head for a contemporary terrace, a free silhouette for a villa garden.

Our specimens are chosen for an even trunk and a dense crown. In a generous planter it anchors an entrance or a poolside; in open ground it becomes the tree the whole garden is arranged around.

Once established it asks for very little: drained soil, sun and a light prune in spring.

Care

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

Water deeply, then let the soil dry out fully; in open ground, one watering every ten to fifteen days is enough in summer after the first year.

  • Light

Full sun all day. The stronger the light, the denser the foliage stays.

  • Feeding

One application of organic fertiliser in spring and a second in early summer. Avoid excess nitrogen.

  • Temperature

Handles 45 °C as well as brief frosts down to −8 °C. Shelter young potted specimens on cold nights in Fes or Meknes.

  • Silver foliage that flatters every light
  • Shrugs off heat, drought and coastal wind
  • Lives for decades and gains character every year
