About this plant

English lavender forms compact mounds of grey foliage, topped from June to August with blue-violet spikes that bees love. Its scent, finer than that of lavandin hybrids, is released at the slightest touch.

Along a path, at the foot of an olive tree or in a terrace planter, it brings a Provençal note that Moroccan light makes even more vivid. It needs little water and dislikes heavy soils.

A firm cut after flowering keeps it dense and youthful for years.

Care

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

Water only once the soil is dry deep down; weekly in pots in summer, almost never in the ground after the first year.

  • Light

Full sun is essential. In shade it grows leggy and flowers poorly.

  • Feeding

No fertiliser needed. Poor, chalky soil intensifies the scent.

  • Temperature

Hardy to −15 °C and comfortable up to 40 °C, provided the roots never sit in water.

  • A scent that greets every passer-by
  • Very little water, very little care
  • Draws bees and butterflies all summer
