The specimen

About this plant

Oleander grows wild along Morocco's wadis, which says everything about its resilience: heat, drought, wind, salt spray, poor soils. From May to October it covers itself in clustered flowers, here in a strong pink and a pure white.

As a free hedge it screens a garden within two seasons; in a planter on a terrace or around a pool it flowers non-stop on measured water. Its narrow evergreen foliage stays handsome in winter.

Every part is toxic: keep out of reach of children and pets, and prune with gloves.

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

    Water weekly in pots in summer, fortnightly in the ground. It survives drought but flowers better with a little water.

  • Light

    Full sun all day for continuous flowering.

  • Feeding

    Flowering-shrub feed in April and July. Nothing more needed.

  • Temperature

    Withstands −8 °C and over 45 °C. Suited to every Moroccan city without protection.
