About this plant
Few plants speak of the South so plainly. Bougainvillea climbs, tumbles and in a few seasons covers a whole wall with coloured bracts, here in a deep magenta that answers the ochres and whites of Moroccan architecture.
Train it as a climber on a pergola or trellis, let it cascade from a rooftop planter, or grow it as a free shrub along a boundary. The stronger the sun and the more measured the watering, the more it flowers.
Its thorns and vigour also make it an excellent privacy screen.

Care
Caring for your plant
Watering
Water generously, then let it dry: mild drought stress triggers flowering. In pots, once or twice a week in summer.
Light
Full sun, facing south or west. That is the condition for colour.
Feeding
Potash-rich feed in spring and midsummer. Too much nitrogen gives leaves at the expense of flowers.
Temperature
Loves extreme heat. Drops its leaves below 5 °C and fears frost: in Fes or Meknes, plant against a south-facing wall.
- Six months of intense colour with no effort
- Loves heat and gets by on little water
- Climbs, trails or clips: it suits every wall
