About this plant
The bitter orange is the tree that scents Marrakech in spring. Hardier than the sweet orange, it tolerates dry heat, hard pruning and poor soils, while offering one of the most fragrant blossoms in the plant world.
Its bitter fruit is not eaten fresh but hangs on the tree for months and yields the famous orange-blossom water. Planted in a line, in a courtyard or as a single clipped globe, it links a contemporary garden to the riad tradition.
It is a long-term tree: plant it once, for good.

Care
Caring for your plant
Watering
A generous weekly watering in summer, fortnightly in spring and autumn, almost nothing in winter once established.
Light
Full sun. It tolerates the light shade of a wall late in the day.
Feeding
Compost at the base in late winter, then citrus feed in April and July.
Temperature
Withstands brief frost down to −5 °C, which makes it reliable in Fes and Meknes. Heat is never a concern.
