About this plant

Musa basjoo is the garden banana: it bears no edible fruit but produces two-metre leaves of luminous green that rustle at the slightest breeze. In a single season it turns a terrace corner into an oasis garden.

Unlike tropical bananas, it copes with cold: its rootstock survives hard frosts and regrows in spring. It loves water and rich soil, and grows faster the better it is fed.

In a clump around a pool, at the back of a patio or in an XXL planter, it is the plant that delivers the most effect the fastest.

Care

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

Abundant: every other day in pots at the height of summer, twice a week in the ground. A thick mulch limits evaporation.

  • Light

Sun or half-shade, sheltered from strong winds that tear the leaves.

  • Feeding

Hungry: nitrogen-rich feed every two weeks from April to September, generous compost in spring.

  • Temperature

Foliage burns below 0 °C but the rootstock survives −10 °C under mulch; the plant regrows every spring.

  • Two metres of foliage in a single season
  • The only banana that survives Fes winters
  • An instant oasis effect around a pool
