The specimen

About this plant

Chamaedorea elegans has been the indoor palm par excellence since Victorian times. Its fine stems carry graceful, fresh green fronds that stay at a human scale: rarely more than a metre in a pot.

It accepts medium to low light, dry air and irregular watering, and suits bedrooms, desks and coffee tables perfectly. On the coast it also lives outdoors in shade.

Safe for pets, it is ideal as a first palm.

Care

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

    Water when the surface is dry, every seven to ten days; never leave water standing at the bottom of the pot.

  • Light

    Medium to low indirect light. It scorches in full sun.

  • Feeding

    Diluted feed every six weeks in spring and summer.

  • Temperature

    From 14 to 30 °C; tolerates air-conditioned rooms.
