About this plant

Rhapis excelsa grows as a clump of tight canes, each crowned with fan-shaped leaves of broad segments in a dark, matte green. Cultivated for centuries in Japan and China, it has the restraint of a woodblock print.

It tolerates shade better than most palms, copes with dry air and is content with moderate watering. In Morocco it also lives outdoors in the shade of a patio, in riad courtyards or under a gallery.

Its very slow growth makes it a precious plant, offered in limited numbers.
