About this plant

Alocasia zebrina is recognised first by its stems, striped like a zebra's coat, holding deep green arrowhead leaves high. Each leaf is a drawing; the whole plant, a sculpture.

More demanding than average, it likes bright light without direct sun, sustained ambient humidity and a free-draining mix that never stays soggy. It may pause in winter and drop a leaf or two before restarting in spring.

A plant for the attentive enthusiast, in a bright living room or a light-filled bathroom.

Care

Caring for your plant

  • Watering

Water when the surface is dry, with room-temperature water, and empty the saucer. Reduce sharply in winter.

  • Light

Bright, indirect light all year; never direct sun on the leaves.

  • Feeding

Diluted feed every three weeks during growth, none in winter.

  • Temperature

From 18 to 28 °C with good humidity; dislikes cold, draughts and very dry air.

  • Zebra-striped stems unlike anything else
  • A graphic, almost sculptural habit
  • The satisfaction of growing a collector's plant well
