Advice for this space
- 01
Plan for the wind
High up, wind topples and dries. Prefer heavy, low pots, group plants so they shelter each other, and stake slender specimens.
- 02
Terracotta dries fast in summer
Being porous, it lets water evaporate: in July a south-facing balcony can need daily watering, early in the morning or after sunset.
- 03
Drainage is compulsory, watch the saucer
Clay pebbles at the bottom, a clear hole, and empty the saucer after watering. Standing water at the base of a pot causes root rot.
