A balcony is an extreme environment in miniature: more wind than a garden, sun reflected by facades, a limited soil volume that dries quickly. But it is also the most used green space in the home. Here is how to compose it with plants that last.
Orientation first
- South and west: full afternoon sun. Citrus, rosemary, lavender, bougainvillea, agave.
- East: gentle morning sun. Jasmine, hibiscus, pittosporum, small olive tree.
- North or covered balcony: bright shade. Rhapis, parlour palm, aspidistra, ferns.
Structure in three heights
One vertical specimen in the corner (olive, dwarf cypress, palm), a middle line of shrubs in planters (pittosporum, bay, lavender) that breaks wind and sight lines, then herbs and trailing plants at hand height. Three well-chosen large pots beat fifteen small ones.
Wind, the quiet enemy
On the upper floors of Casablanca or facing the strait in Tangier, wind dries more than the sun does. Weight the pots, prefer small tough foliage, and consider a wooden screen: plants behind it grow twice as well.
