Casablanca knows neither the frosts of Fez nor the furnace of Marrakech. Its summers peak around 33 °C, winters stay mild and sea air brings welcome humidity. In return: an almost permanent west wind on the seafront and salt spray reaching several hundred metres inland.
Seafront: Anfa, Aïn Diab, Dar Bouazza
Choose salt-tolerant species: Pittosporum tobira, oleander, Mediterranean fan palm, Washingtonia, agave, rosemary and olive. Ficus benjamina and bay laurel hold in the second row, behind a front line of tough plants that filters the spray.
Inland districts: Californie, Bouskoura, Maârif
Salt disappears and the palette widens: citrus, hibiscus, jasmine, pomegranate and Strelitzia reginae thrive in the ground. Mild winters even allow plants that are brought indoors elsewhere, such as ornamental bananas, to stay outside.
In apartments
Ocean light, often hazy in the morning, is soft and diffuse: ideal for monstera, philodendron, calathea and kentia, which dislike direct sun. West-facing balconies, however, get wind and salt: reserve them for rosemary, lavender, agave and small olive trees.
