- Pothos: grows anywhere, roots in a glass of water, tells you when thirsty (soft leaves).
- Snake plant: tolerates shade, sun and three weeks without water.
- ZZ plant: glossy, slow, indifferent to nearly everything except overwatering.
- Aloe vera: a sunny windowsill and a watering every fortnight.
- Peace lily: droops dramatically when thirsty, stands back up within an hour of watering.
The equipment that matters
A pot with a drainage hole and its saucer, quality potting mix, a long-spouted watering can. That's all. A moisture meter is a genuine plus for the first months: it teaches you to feel the soil. The rest — mister, fertiliser, stakes — comes with experience.
The three classic mistakes
- Watering out of habit, the same day every week, without touching the soil.
- Repotting straight away into a far too large pot: the soil stays wet too long.
- Moving the plant as soon as a leaf yellows. An occasional yellow leaf is normal.
