The guide to indoor plants in Morocco

Reading each room's light, watering right, choosing the right pot: the fundamentals for houseplants that last.

A houseplant rarely dies of neglect; it most often dies of too much attention — too much water, too many moves, too much fertiliser. This guide covers the four decisions that really matter, in the order to make them.

1. Reading the light

Stand where the plant will go, at noon, and look at the window. If you see the sky and the sun: bright light (strelitzia, ficus, indoor citrus). If you see the sky without direct sun: medium light (monstera, philodendron, kentia). If you see neither: bright shade (snake plant, ZZ plant, aglaonema, peace lily). Beyond three metres from a window, almost nothing grows for long.

2. Water by finger, not by calendar

Push a finger 3 cm into the soil: dry, water; cool, wait.
Water generously until it runs out of the drainage hole, then empty the saucer after 20 minutes.
Halve the frequency in winter: growth slows and the plant drinks less.
Very hard tap water (Marrakech, Fez): let it stand overnight or alternate with filtered water for calathea.

3. Pot and substrate

A drainage hole is not optional. If your cachepot has none, keep the plant in its growing pot inside it and raise it on clay pebbles. The substrate must be airy: a houseplant mix enriched with perlite or coco fibre. Repot in spring, into a pot only 3–5 cm wider.

4. Don't move it

Fiddle-leaf figs, weeping figs and most large plants drop leaves with every change of position. Choose the spot once, let the plant adapt for six weeks, and simply give the pot a quarter turn every week.
