   Species that accept shade

   Bedrooms are often the least lit room in the house. Snake plant, zamioculcas and aspidistra cope with it; a fiddle-leaf fig will not.

   Water less, especially in winter

   Push a finger three centimetres into the mix: if it is still damp, wait. Overwatering kills more houseplants than forgetting to water does.

   Check toxicity if a pet sleeps there

   Cats and dogs chew whatever leaf they can reach. Toxicity is stated on every product page: choose a risk-free species at the foot of the bed.
